Canon McMillian High School
Congratulations to Steve Patrick for taking 2nd Place at the JV Powerade tournament. In his first match he pinned Jon Walton (South Side Beaver) at 1:19. He then went on to beat the #1 seed Alex Intihar (Westmont Hilltop) 9-0. In the Quarterfinals he scrammbled for a 6-0 victory over Zach Lynch (Franklin Regional). It was a gut wrench time in the semi's and he pulled out a 6-4 win over Mike Tempalski (Hopewell). In the finals he put a good fight but lost 6-1 to Jeremy Basinger (Connellsville).
Nice job Stevie!!! Keep up the hard work.
Coach Perri selects a youth wrestler each week that worked really hard at practice and never quit during his matches.
So far this year's winners are….
WEEK 3: MATTHEW ZANONE
WEEK 2: STEVEN VINES
WEEK 1: PARKER REED
MONTOUR HIGH SCHOOL
The Varsity Blue Devils traveled to Montour High School last night and had a dominating performance winning 60-12. Out of the 14 matches the boys won by Fall in 7 of the matches by Andy Buttlar, Evan Brem, Jack Hnath, Austin VanHorn, Scott Allen, Jeremy Hinds, and Steven Riggs in the blowout. We also had two other grappers win by decision…Giancarlo Lies won 9-3 and Evan Brailey won 5-4. Lebo added another 12 points with Cyrus Sukhadia and Adam Kemerer earning forfeits.
Lebo improves to 5-8 overall and 1-1 in the section. They now head to the West Mifflin Tournament over the Christmas break.
NORTH HILLS INVITATIONAL
The varsity Blue Devils went to the North Hills Invitational Duals looking to rebound after a disappointing loss to Canon Mac earlier in the week. Well, things didn't go as planned and the Blue Devils dropped all five matches to run it's record to 4-8 overall.
In the opening match they actually led Kiski 6-0 via a Stephen Riggs Fall at 5:29 but lost the rest of the bouts to lose 62-6.
In Round 2 they squared off against Greensburg Salem and five Blue Devils came away with victories before losing 44-27. Stephen Gannon, Jack Hnath, Scott Allen and JT Buda all won by Fall and Adam Kemerer won a close match 7-6.
Round 3 was against host North Hills and the same five Blue Devils delivered victories, Hnath and Allen won by Fall, Kemerer majored his opponent 11-0, Gannon and Buda each won by 2 points. They lost 44-22 overall.
Round 4 was against defending WPIAL Champion and crosstown rival Bethel Park. The Blue Devils put up a good fight only to come up short again losing 40-30. Hnath, Evan Brailey, and Austin Van Horne won by Fall, and Kemerer and Buda each pulled out 1 point victories. In a losing effort Allen gave 2x State Qualifier Nick Bonaccorsi all he could handle losing a close match 5-0.
Round 5 was probably the Blue Devils best opportunity to pull a win out of the tournament versus Pine-Richland. Andy Buttlar and Allen each posted Falls in their wins. Brailey won his match 10-7 and Hnath gutted out another victory 6-5. Even with an additional two forefits for Cyrus Sukhadia and Kemerer it wasn't enough as the Blue Devils dropped their final match 38-36.
The Blue Devils did have some grapplers that posted a solid outing. Adam Kemerer and Jack Hnath each went 4-1 overall, while Scott Allen and JT Buda each put-up 3 wins.
Lebo wrestling fans will travel to Montour this Wednesday to cheer the boys to victory.
