5 Blue Devils Head to WPIAL’s

Saturday, Feb 28th – Mt. Lebanon High School

Congratulations to the five Lebo grapplers for placing in the Section 5 tournament and earning a spot in the WPIAL tourney next weekend at Canon Mac! 

Andy Butlar (103), Adam Kemerer (130), and Chris Vayo (140) each won their consolation finals match to take 3rd Place while Evan Brem (112) and Jack Hnath (152) took 4th Place.

Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic XXXVI

Saturday, March 20th at the Fitzgerald Field House, University of Pittsburgh.

Love wrestling? Come watch some of the best High School wrestlers in our State and the country!

The WPIAL All-Stars will square off against the New York All-Stars at 6:00

The Pennsylvania All-Stars face Team USA at 8:00.

Varsity Starting Sectionals

The Varsity Blue Devils are getting ready to host the Individual Section 5 tournament at Mt. Lebanon High School.  Lebo will send 5 boys with 20+ wins on the year into the tournament.   Andy Buttlar (103, 21-14, Sr), Adam Kemerer (130, 23-11, Jr), Jack Hnath (152, 24-10, Sr), Austin VanHorn (160, 20-9, Sr), and Scott Allen (171, 24-10, Jr).  The remainder of the team is as follows: Evan Brem (112, 12-19, Fr), Michael Kostas (119, 6-9, Jr), Steve Gannon (125, 16-18, Jr), Giancarlo Lies (135, 15-19, So), Chris Vayo (140, 13-8, So), Steve Patrick (145, 2-4, Sr), Evan Brailey (189, 18-13, Sr), Jeremy Hinds (215, 7-12, Sr), and Steven Riggs (285, 12-15, Sr). 

If you're a wrestling fan, then please come and support the boys in their quest to become State Champions!

Lebo Youth Gone Wild

Big props to four of our 1st year youth grapplers for placing in the Ft. Cherry Novice Tournament! Luke Iovino and Matt Zanone took 1st Place while Steven Vines and Parker Reed captured 2nd Place trophies.  They've been working really hard all winter long and getting better with each practice.  Well done kids…keep working hard!

Also, Tuner Gray put in a good showing at the Trinity Odd Age Open.  He captured 1st Place in the 11u – 85 lb division.  Nice Job T!

Sammy takes 1st!

Congratulations to Sammy White for taking 1st Place (12u / 80 lbs) at the Brooke Open in West Virginia this past weekend.  It was Sammy's first open championship and he is pumped up!!!  Nice work Sammy.

Up In St. Clair Lebo Captures Win

Upper St. Clair High School – Feb 17

The Varsity Blue Devils traveled to rival USC and the boys were down by as many 8 points in the match but were able to storm back to a 45-24 victory.   Bonus points were in the making as Chris Vayo, Jack Hnath, Austin VanHorn, Scotty Allen, and Andy Buttlar all came away with pins.  Evan Brailey added 3 team points with a decision winning 16-10.  The Blue Devils were also awarded 12 team points winning by forfeit at 119 – Cyrus Sukhadia and 215 – Jeremy Hinds. 

The Blue Devils closed out the year with an 11-13 record-  winning 4 of their last 6.  The boys now focus on a new challenge….they'll be battling to qualify for the PIAA State Championships.  The first step in the long process is by placing in the top 4 of the Sectional tournament (Mt. Lebo's South gym on February 27th starting at 10:30 AM) which places you in the WPIAL tournament at Canon Mac.  Once you qualify for WPIAL's you must finish in the top 3 to move into the State tournament at Hershey.  The boys and coaches have worked really hard this year and they need your support now more than ever so please get out your Blue & Gold and join the party.

2010-2011 WPIAL Wrestling Alignment

The WPIAL has decided to make 4 x 12 team sections.  Mt. Lebanon is now in Section 4-B along with Bethel Park, McGuffey, Peters Twp, Trinity, and Waynesburg.  The other half, 4-A, will consist of Canon McMillian, Chartiers Valley, Montour, Moon, Upper St. Clair, and West Allegheny.

Varsity KO’s Golden Eagles

Mt. Lebanon High School – February 13th

It was Senior Recognition Day for the varsity Blue Devils and they went out in style beating crosstown rival Keystone Oaks 62-3.  Lebo won 13 of the 14 matches in capturing their 10th dual meet victory of the season.  Jack Hnath and Evan Brailey won by Fall – Jack pinned his opponent at 1:16 and Evan heard the mat at 3:56.  Evan Brem and Adam Kemerer each won by Technical Fall – Evan posted a 15-0 shutout and Adam won 16-1.  Austin VanHorn notched a Major Decision winning 11-0.  Andy Buttlar, Giancarlo Lies, Chris Vayo, and Steven Riggs each won by decision – Andy 7-4, Giancarlo 7-0, Chris 5-1, and Steven 4-2.  Lebo was handed an additional 24 team points with 4 forfeits by Michael Kostas, Cyrus Sukhadia, Steve Patrick, and Scott Allen.

The Blue Devils now go on a short trip down Rt 19 to face Upper St. Clair (5-5) on Wednesday, Feb 17th – 7:30.  It should be a good match and the kids would love to see some Blue & Gold in the stands so come show your support.

Come and see the #22 Pittsburgh Panthers battle for the Eastern Wrestling League Championship at the Fitzgerald Field House on Friday, February 19th (7:00) against #21 Edinboro University.  It's not that often you get to watch some of the best wrestlers in the country lay it on the line for the EWL Title!
